This may sound crazy, but one of the easiest ways to get the most out of your life is drawing every day.
A study at Drexel University, and published in Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association, showed that taking time to sketch or doodle can make you feel better and think more clearly.
Here are three reasons to find the time to doodle every day.
When you draw, you focus on the details. You see the deeper layer of wonder that often slides by when we rush through life. Noticing these details can help bring you a deeper sense of joy and appreciation for the world around you.
We go through a lot of life moving from one task to another. There’s nothing wrong with that, in fact sometimes it’s the best way to be, but sometimes you need a break. By sketching regularly you open up the creative part of your brain. It won’t just help you get inspired to draw, but to create anything that you feel passionate about. Just sketching every once in a while can motivate you to become the creator you have the power to be.
3. Flow States
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's 2004 TED Talk explains that a flow state is when you’re consumed by the thing you’re doing and the rest of the world falls away. It has other names, being in the zone, being locked in, hyper-focus, but whatever you call it, a flow state can have a huge influence on you. Studies have shown that even when you’re not in a flow state it can help alleviate anxiety and boost your happiness. The focus that comes with drawing helps induce a flow state and calm your mind.
So here’s the challenge.
Sketch something every day for the next 30 days.
Take just 30 minutes out of your day to create something new.
