Focus = Fun?
Why I couldn't focus and realized the statement "I can't focus" is sort of inaccurate.
Recently, I caught myself thinking "I can't focus." Since I was trying to write an email about focus, the irony wasn't lost on me. So, I thought about why I couldn't focus and realized the statement "I can't focus" is sort of inaccurate – not just for me, but for most people.
The dictionary defines focus as a word to describe a person’s ability to pay particular attention to something.
When you think about it, we can focus for hours on fun activities, like when we binge our favorite TV series or when we scroll through social media. We don’t recognize ourselves as being “focused” in these moments, but we’re actually incredibly focused. We’re practically focus superheros!
I think a more accurate statement would be, "I CAN focus, just not on a particular activity that I'm struggling with."
So how do we make focusing on work as easy as getting mesmerized by our favorite TV show?
I think the secret is making work fun. Work can be fun when we find meaning in it, when we enjoy doing it, and when we're good at it. We find ourselves in a flow state, we lose track of time, and we're not easily distracted.
But getting there can be hard. What if we have to focus on something we don't enjoy - like, say, stapling papers together for hours until your fingers bleed? (My first job as an assistant)
You can try to make it fun by finding ways to make it meaningful to you. For example, you can see the work as a way to play a self-improvement game. See how many tasks you can complete in the next hour without getting distracted. Listen to music or an audiobook while you work. The more fun you have while you work, the less likely you'll be tempted to distract yourself.
Speaking of focus and fun - as you probably know, we are the inventors of the popular focus supplement, OptiMind®. In recent years, we kept hearing our customers say the same thing, "We don't like taking pills." Many felt like taking pills was a chore. It wasn't fun and they weren't excited to do it.
So, our CEO, Lucas Siegel, listened. We are all about making focus more attainable for everybody. If that means making focus pills more fun to take, then challenge accepted!
